This holiday celebrates the great victory of the Jews, in 520 BCE, over a terrible enemy Haman, who wanted to destroy all of the Jews in the Persian Empire, 66 years after the destruction of the First Temple. The Jews were saved by G-d, through the intervention of Mordechai and his niece, Queen Esther, who convinced the Jews to to remain true to their faith. On the 13th of Adar, the very day which Haman chose for their destruction through a lottery (Pur), the Jews rose up and defeated their enemies.
