NJOP to Celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of Shabbat Across America/Canada with the Publication of “ A Gourmet Shabbat,” which pairs Timeless Jewish Traditions with Extraordinary Recipes from Famous Chefs
NEW YORK, NY; February __ , 2006 – In celebration of the tenth anniversary of Shabbat Across America/Canada on March 3 rd , the National Jewish Outreach Program (www.njop.org) will give tens of thousands of Jews a “taste” of Shabbat with some help from world-famous chefs. A Gourmet Shabbat* is a full-color glossy publication featuring Friday night customs, blessings and songs surrounded by beautiful photography and mouth-watering recipes from master chefs such as Bobby Flay, Wolfgang Puck and Jean-Georges Vongerichten.
“Food plays an important role in many religions and cultures. In Judaism, our tradition teaches us that it is the special ingredient of “Shabbat,” which makes recipes taste better on the Sabbath than on any other day,” said Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, founder and director of NJOP. “This unique publication, A Gourmet Shabbat, includes the masterful artistry and scholarly words of Rabbi Yonah Weinrib alongside the culinary gifts of world-famous chefs. It is our hope that this combination of spiritual and palatable delights will become a perfect recipe for those who wish to experience the special ‘taste' of Shabbat.”
A Gourmet Shabbat was designed to help individuals and families bring the spirit of the Sabbath home each week. It includes recipes for traditional Friday Night fare such as chicken soup, gefilte fish and brisket from world-famous chefs including:
Susie Fishbein
Bobby Flay
Sarah Moulton
Jeffrey Nathan
Joan Nathan
Wolfgang Puck
Jean-Georges Vongerichten
The 10 th annual Shabbat Across America/Canada will take place in locations around the US and Canada on March 3, 2006 and is sponsored by the Melohn Family in honor of Mrs. Martha Melohn. The program introduces Jews with limited Jewish knowledge and background to the joy and beauty of the Jewish Sabbath. More than a half a million people have participated in Shabbat Across America/Canada since its inception in 1997, and more than 600 synagogues will participate in this highly successful outreach program this year.
" Shabbat Across America/Canada allows Jews-many of whom have never enjoyed any Sabbath experience-to come together to get a real feel for one of the Jewish tradition's greatest treasures," continued Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, founder and director of NJOP. "Of course, Shabbat is not merely a series of gourmet meals. Shabbat is an environment of light, peace, domestic tranquility and song. But most of all, an environment of sanctity.”
While specific program details vary from location to location, all participants will enjoy an explanatory Friday evening Sabbath service, as well as a festive communal dinner in a welcoming environment. Many synagogues will utilize NJOP's educational modules while others will choose to bring in guest speakers or other special programs.
